About the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) Process

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to or transiting through Canada by air. It’s a quick and straightforward online process designed to enhance border security while ensuring smooth travel for eligible individuals.

What is an eTA?

An eTA is an electronically linked travel authorization associated with your passport. It is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. The eTA allows you to visit Canada for short stays (typically up to six months) for tourism, business, or transit purposes.

Key Points to Know About the eTA Process:

  1. Simple Online Application:
The eTA application process is conducted entirely online. There’s no need for paperwork or in-person visits, making it a convenient option for travelers.
  2. Affordable Fee:
Applying for an eTA costs only CAN$7. This fee is paid online during the application process.
  3. Quick Processing:
Most eTA applications are approved within minutes. However, some applications may take longer if additional documents are required. In such cases, applicants will receive email instructions within 72 hours.
  4. Eligibility Requirements:
    • Visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to or transiting through Canada need an eTA.
    • Certain travelers from visa-required countries may also qualify for an eTA if they meet specific criteria, such as holding a valid U.S. nonimmigrant visa or having held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years.
    • Travelers arriving by car, bus, train, or boat, including cruise ships, require a visitor visa instead of an eTA.
  5. Travel Limitations:
    • An eTA does not permit you to work or study in Canada. If you plan to work or study, you must apply for the appropriate permits.
    • An eTA does not guarantee entry to Canada. Border officials will assess your eligibility upon arrival.
  6. Validity:
Once approved, an eTA is linked to your passport and remains valid for multiple entries, provided your passport remains valid. Always travel with the same passport you used for your eTA application.
